What are Your Users Doing with Company Supplied and Paid for mobiles over the weekend?

This article was published on 23/01/12 and filed under Business.

In December we went to a wedding. It was a close relative, with another, let’s say, Facebook addicted relative in the bridal party.

So there we were, inside the church, waiting for the ceremony to start. In traditional fashion the bride was late. As the kids started becoming restless, and older participants shared their frustration as to why don’t young people today make things on time, I jested to those around me that I would wager them $10.00 that if you got onto facebook our beloved addicted relative would have already posted their current location and ETA.

After the laughter of the wager settled, peoples eyes turned a little bit more serious. You know the look in someones eyes when they see merit in a joke and consider whether it is just possible that our Facebook addicted relative had nothing else to do and posted their current status and ETA on Facebook. I won’t go into further specifics than to say that I won the $10.00 bet and I advised me relative to get out more and try a 40 hour facebook famine to regain some control over her life.

It certainly was funny and the cause of much laughter – but also quite scary at the same time. With ubiquitous access many people have become their own reality TV stars through social media. What’s worse, in many of these cases – you are providing them the handset and paying for the carriage for this to happen, and this is not funny.

The line between work and non-work time continues to be blurred. Have you mitigated your risks? Are you paying only for what you should be, or are you paying for mobiles so people can have a great time on the weekend? This may seem harsh, but consider the example that if staff took paper from your office to print personal documents each night and on weekends – would you allow this? No way you say. Why therefore do we not provide similar frameworks around mobility?
